New England and Gator Records Fall

Meets over the first half of December at Keefe Tech and at MIT saw three New England and seven individual Gator records fall, with 143 lifetime bests at the MIT meet as the Gators prepared for the 2005 Championships.

RELAY RECORDS
In an amazing set of swims at the MIT meet, the Boys 13-14 Relay teams including Greg Lowen, Greg Michels, Mike Monovoukas, Chris Rogers and Robert Dowd broke New England and Gator records in the 200 and 400 Free and 400 Medley Relays. The Boys 200 Free relay (Monovoukas, Dowd, Rogers, Lowen) with a time of 1:30.38 broke the New England record of 1:32.54 formerly held since 1985 by BGSC and the 400 Medley relay team (Rogers, Michels, Monovoukas, Lowen) with a time of 3:20.75 broke the 1994 record of 3:48.74 formerly held by the Mass Bay Marlins both by more than two seconds! The 400 Free relay team (Lowen, Rogers, Michels and Monovoukas) with a time of 3:20.75 continued their dominance, breaking the New England Record formerly held by BGSC (3:22.13) since 1990.

INDIVIDUAL RECORDS
Mike Monovoukas broke the Gator 100 Yard Free record at the MIT meet with a 48.56 and for the second year in a row won the Boys 13-14 High Point Award. The previous record was held by Frank Han since 1985; while swimming with the Gators, Frank was an Age Group National Record holder as well as a National Champion. At the same meet, Chris Rogers went on to swim a 1:59.35 in the 200 Yard Backstroke, breaking the 30 year old record of former Gator Olympian Bobby Hackett (1:59.50) and then surpassed Ryan Berg's 100 Yard backstroke record (54.85; 1998) three times during the meet, with a best time of 54.48. Just a week earlier at the Candy Apple Classic, Allison Scott broke Leslie Bargmann's two year old Gator record in the 200 Yard Breaststroke by almost 6 seconds with a time of 2:50.95.

Kudos also go to the ENTIRE TEAM as 143 of the 252 Individual Entries were lifetime personal bests!

3 BGSC swimmers & 7 Relays made USA Swimming 2004 LCM Top 16
This list identifies the 16 best LCM times by age group during 2004 from across the country and is a tremendous accomplishment. Individual awardees included Chris Rogers(13-14 100M Back) , Jess Perry (15-16 100M Breast) and Katie Fritsch (17-18 100M Back). The 13-14 Boys relay team of Ben Driver, Greg Lowen, Mike Monovoukas and Chris Rogers made the list four times (200, 400 and 800 Free Relay and 200 Medley Relay). Other winning relays were the Girls 15-16 200M Free Relay (Kristyn Roth, Rebecca Harris, Lisa Donnelly and Sarah Ernst) and the Girls 400M Free and Medley Relay teams (Sarah Bargmann, Caroline Dowd, Katie Fritsch and Karen Gately). !!! NEW ENGLAND AGE GROUP COACH OF THE YEAR !!!

We are honored to announce Michelle Bernal as the American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) Age Group Coach of the Year ( New England) for 2003-2004. Michelle was able to accomplish excellent things for the Bernal’s Gator Swim Club in New England and nationally. The swimmers had many best times, New England top ten times and over ten top 16 National Reportable Times. Michelle is also the coaches representatives for New England Swimming and the Associate Head Coach of Bernal’s Gator Swim Club.

Gator Swimmers ranked among the Top 10 in New England
300 of the Top 10 times achieved in New England during the 2003-2004 SCY and LCM seasons were posted by Gator swimmers as recently published by New England Swimming. This included 145 SCY and 155 LCM swims representing the best 10 times by event and age group. Six Gators named to US Swimming 2004 Scholastic All America Team
This honor is earned based on GPA during the Sophomore, Junior or Senior years and participation in national events. Points are scored based on a weighted GPA of at least 3.5 for academic courses and placement in an individual event at any of the following competitions: 2003 ConocoPhillips Summer Nationals, 2003 Summer Speedo Champions Series (Sectionals), 2003 U.S. Open, 2004 ConocoPhillips Spring Nationals, 2004 Spring Speedo Champions Series (Sectionals), 2004 Olympic Trials, 2003 National Disability Championships and 2003 Open Water National Championships. More than 480 women across the country were named. The Gator awardees include:

! New Gator Records !

Two new Long Course Records have been posted
Matt Hrabchak broke the 8&U 50 Meter Back record set last year by Ian Wilson with a time of 49.58 and Dimos Skandalis broke Frank Han's 22 year old record in the 11-12 50 Meter Fly with a new time of 30.49.

Top 10 and Outstanding Swimmers for New England Posted.
For the 03-04 season, BGSC had 48 swimmers gain Top Ten New England swimming recognition -- 2nd highest in New England. Of these 48 swimmers, 21 achieved this listing in both the SCY and LCM seasons. Also, 8 athletes were named "Outstanding Swimmers" based on points achieved throughout the season. These swimmers included: Caroline Dowd, Katherine Fritsch, Karen Gately, Matthew Hrabchek, Joanne Kelley, Gregory Michels, Michael Monovoukas, and Jessica Perry.

August 11, 2004

More Gator and New England Records Fall!
At the Far Western Championship LC meet held in San Jose, California in early August 2004, Chris Rogers, Ben Driver, Michael Monovoukas & Greg Lowen broke a number of New England and Gator relay records:

  • They broke the New England record for the 13-14 boys 200M Medley relay with a time of 1:57.41L. They re-broke the Gator record of 1:59.31L for this event that they had just broken in June in Florida with a 1:59.27L.
  • They broke the New England record for the 13-14 boys 200M Freestyle relay with a new time of 1:43.87L. With this time they also beat the previously held Gator record from 1985 of 1:45.13L.
  • They broke two records for the 13-14 boys 400M Freestyle relay with a time of 3:51.76L. They beat the previous New England record of 3:53.72L held by the Mass Bay Marlins relay team which included Olympian Eric Vendt. They beat the prior Gator record of 3:53.94L from 1985.

In addition, at the Connecticut Seniors meet in July 2004, Chris Rogers broke a 30 year old Gator record for the 13-14 boys 100M Backstroke of 1:03.77L with a time of 1:02.76L. This Gator record was from 1974 held by Bobby Hackett who was a Silver medalist in the 1976 Olympics in the 1500M Freestyle.

Gator Record Falls!
Congratulations to Chris Rogers, Ben Driver, Michael Monovoukas and Greg Lowen who broke the Gator Male 13-14 200 Medley Relay at the Fort Lauderdale Age Group Invitational in Fort Lauderdale, Florida last week. Their time of 1:59.27 just surpassed the old record that has been in place since 1985.

GATORS IN THE TOP 100 SWIMS OF ALL TIMES
USA Swimming has begun compiling an All Time Top 100 List based on the final Top 16 rankings from 1965 through 2003. The compilation is still incomplete but was just updated on March 30 and currently includes 10 & Unders (Girls and Boys), 11-12 (Girls and Boys) 13-14 (Girls and Boys) and 15-16 (Girls only). 12 different Gator swimmers are in the list so far for 20 events. The list includes Frank Han, Alex Kostich, Larissa Herold, Ray Carey, Amanda Hall, Julie Mitchell, Susan Trainer, Katrina Maestrellis, Kevin Riley, Brittany Sasser and our currently active Katie Fritsch and Michael Monovoukas. NCSA Junior National Championships
11 Gators traveled south to Orlando Florida for the third Short Course NCSA Junior National Championships from March 22-26, 2004. The competition was intense with more than 14 Junior National records falling.

Jessica Perry's preliminary 100 Breast swim of 1:03.49 set a new New England Resident Record and the Gator 15-18 and Open Records.

Eastern Region Speedo Sectional Championships
A number of Gators attended the Eastern Region Speedo Sectional Championships held March 11-14, 2004 at the Nassau County Aquatic Center, Long Island New York. In this an Olympic year, the format was changed to Long Course Meters. Many Gators achieved Personal Bests (see Sectional Championships Improved Times ) looking for Junior National or Summer National cuts.

Katie Fritsch provided the highlight of the meet for the Gators with an OLYMPIC TRIAL qualifying time (and new Meet Record) of 1:04.44 in the 100 M Backstroke

New England Open Championship Results
A spirited Gator team came to the New England Open Championship March 4-7, 2004 in Blodgett Pool at Harvard University. They were spurred on by lots of cheering parents and a special appearance on Saturday night by a contingent of 12&Under Gators who joined in the Gator cheers from the stands. Many Gators swam their best times.

*** Record Falls ***

The 13-14 Girls were determined to make their mark on the meet and they did as they tied the New England Record and broke the Gator record in the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay. Francesca Tocci, Mildred Conroy, Alena Chubet and Leslie Bargmann pulled together late Sunday night in a Time trial after the session was over and swam their hearts out to get the record and a Top 16 Reportable time.

Overall the Gators finished in third place with 1958.5 points.

High Point Awardees included:

  • Max Butler Open 7th
  • Michael Monovoukas 13-14 3rd

The 12 And Under Championships took place February 19-22, 2004 at Salem State College. Many of the younger Gators improved their times (see 12&U Improved Times).

Greg Michels came in 4th place for High Point Award, scoring 144 Points.

Four Gators (Sarah Bargmann, Caroline Dowd, Katie Fritsch and Karen Gately) attended the Conoco Phillips Spring National Championships held at the YMCA Aquatic Center in Orlando Florida on February 10-14, 2004. The competition was intense with Michael Phelps leading the way in the Long Course Meter format. Finishing in the Top 100 included:
