New England Top 10 and Outstanding Swimmer Lists Posted

New England Swimming just posted the list of Top 10 Swimmers and Outstanding Swimmers for the 2002-2003 Short Course and Long Course seasons. The Gators continued to show their strength as 20 were Top 10 Swimmers for Short course and 37 for Long Course.

10 Gators were named Outstanding Swimmer. Check out the details.

New Long Course Records

Two New England Records and 4 Gator records fell this past LC season.

  • Jessica Perry broke the Girls 13-14 100 Breast (1:12.47) and 200 Breast (2:40.27) New England (Resident) and Gator records on the way to her Olympic Trial cut in the 100 Breast. She also broke the Gator Women's Open record in the 100 Breast.
  • Robert Dowd established the time to beat with a Gator record in the 400 IM, a new event for 11-12 Males, with a time of 5:55.38.

The Gator Records have now been updated with the 2003 Long Course results.

Scholastic All-America Team Announced

8 Gators were among the 480 Women swimmers to be named to the US Swimming 2002-2003 Scholastic All-America Team. Nominations are based on a minimum 3.5 GPA and entry in a major National meet and scores are calculated based on actual GPA (weighted for Honor's courses) and place of finish in each event swum (Check out all the details by Clicking Here).

The honored Gators include:

  • Katie Fritsch 199 points
  • Chase Butler 195 points
  • Emily Brush 194 points
  • Caroline Dowd 182 points
  • Annie Kelley 178 points
  • Sarah Bargmann 174 points
  • Mary Dooe 172 points
  • Deirdre Devlin 122 points

Katie Fritsch (tied for 47th) and Chase Butler (tied for 89th) were in the top 100 and 5 Gators had 4.0 GPAs (Fritsch, Butler, Brush, Dowd and Dooe). Overall, the Gator Women's team placed 7th in the entire country!

Lexington Minuteman

Gators Compete at N.E. Open

Six Lexington resident swimmers, representing Bernal's Gator Swim Club, recently competed at the New England Open long course championships, a 50 meter pool venue, held at Brown University.  Each joined over 40 teams and 550 of New England's top swimmers in a four day competition swum with trials in the morning and finals at night.  Fast swims were turned in by Lexington High School graduating senior Jessica Santapaul, 10 th grader Sasha Dobrolioubov (14), 9th graders Lauren Wilson (14) and Alicia Maestri (14), and 8th graders Michael Monovoukas (13 at Diamond) and Greg Lowen (13 at Clarke).

Jessica Santapaul lead the way with an overall 5th in the 400 Free (4:37.12), 11th in the 400 IM (5:16.91), and a 24th in the 200 IM (2:33.99).  In the female 13-14 age bracket, top 10 ranked swims were turned in by Lauren Wilson in the 100 Back (8th / 1:11.71), 200 Back (10th / 2:34.77), and 100 Free (10th / 1:03.82).  Top swims for Alicia Maestri included the 200 Fly (12th / 2:41.26), 1500 free (13th / 19:58.26), and 800 Free (17th / 10:22.08).

In the male 13-14 age group, Sasha Dobrolioubov finished 8th in high points.  His top 10 swims were the 100 Breast (3rd / 1:13.79), 400 Free (3 rd / 4:32.58), 200 Breast (4th / 2:43.47), 200 Free (6th / 2:09.65), 200 IM (7th / 2:26.14), 50 Free (8th / 27.92), and 800 Free (9th / 9:31.72).  Michael Monovoukas achieved 5th in high points with outstanding finishes in the 100 Free (3 rd / 59.23), 100 Fly (4th / 1:05.70), 1500 Free (4th / 18:08.30), 200 Free (5th / 2:09.56), 800 Free (5th / 9:31.72), 200 Fly (5th / 2:25.36), 50 Free (7th / 27.83), and 400 Free (8th / 4:37.56).  Greg Lowen's fastest of his 9 qualifying entries were in the 50 Free (1st / 27.08), 100 Back (7th / 1:10.10), 200 Back (8th / 2:30.24), and 100 Free (9th / 1:00.26).

!!! Jessica Perry gets Olympic Trial Cut !!!

Saturday was a banner day for Jessica Perry at the SPEEDO Sectional LC Championship at Buffalo as she made her first National Cut in prelims of the 100 M Breaststroke (1:12.74) and then came back in a fast finals field to capture an Olympic Trial cut with a 1:12.56. Quite an accomplishment for a 14-year old! Jessica finished third in the event and also took a 6th place in the 200 Breast (2:40.27).

Other swimmers in finals were: Annie Kelley (100 Fly; 1:04.24; 5th), Karen Gately (50 Free; 27.16; 3rd and 100 Free; 1:00.36; 8th and 100 Back; 1:08.97; 8th), Emily Brush (100 Back; 1:06.78; 5th and 200 Back; 2:24.74; 6th), and Sarah Bargmann (100 Back; 1:06.85; 6th).

Weston Swimmers Compete in New England Championship at Harvard University

Robert Dowd and Francesca Tocci, both 12 years of age and Weston residents, competed in the New England Championship this past weekend at Harvard University's Blodgett Pool. Both swimmers are members of the Bernal's Gator Swim Club, a USA sanctioned team located in Waltham.

Robert Dowd was awarded 5th place for the High Point Award (most points in the Championship) for winning a medal in all nine of the events in which he competed. His highlights included finishing 2nd in the 50 meter butterfly (:31.64), 100m butterfly (1:09.75), and the 200m butterfly(2:39.39). He placed 3rd in the 400m IM (individual medley- 5.55:38).

Francesca Tocci also qualified to compete in nine events receiving medals in seven. Francesca's highlights included finishing 4th in the 100 m freestyle (1:04.83), 5th in the 200m freestyle (2:21.78) and 6th in the 50m freestyle (30.16).

The Bernal Gators are coached by the renowned Joe Bernal. Coach Bernal, formerly Head Coach of Harvard University, was the United States Olympics Coach in 1984 and 1988. Additionally, Bernal coached the United States Team at the Pan American Games in 1991. Coach Bernal's past Olympians include Ray Carey ('96), Scott Jaffe and David Berkoff (both '96). In all, Bernal has coached six Olympians. High school seniors from Bernal Gators will be attending Harvard, Yale, Brown, Penn and Vanderbilt this coming fall.

The nine girls attending were: Jessica Aiello, Sara Aiello, Sara Bargmann, Emily Brush, Chase Butler, Caroline Dowd, Katie Fritsch, Karen Gately, and Annie Kelley. Head Coach Joe Bernal and Coach Mike Riley directed the team to VICTORY!

!!! CONGRATULATIONS GATORS !!!

Katie Fritsch makes first two Senior National cuts at Speedo Sectional Championships
Katie Fritsch made her first two Senior National Cuts at this past weekend's Speedo Sectional Short Course Championships held at the Nassau County Aquatic Center on Long Island, NY. Her 55.52 in the prelims of the 100 Back also set a new meet record, which was short-lasted as Jenny Thompson beat it in the finals. The next day, she swam a 2:00.73 in the 200 back for her second National cut. Both times were also Gator records.

More information to follow on the accomplishments of rest of the team as soon as full results are available for downloading from the web.


Two Gators Make Top 16 in the country for 2001-2002 Season

  • Katie Fritsch and Ryan Berg made the final list of Top 16 swimmers in the country for the 2001 - 2002 season.

  • Katie placed 5th in the 100 Yard Back (57.10) and 7th in the 200 Yard Back (2:02.54) for 13-14 year olds.

  • Ryan placed 9th in the 200 Meter IM (2:06.95) for 16-18 year olds.

New England Record Breaker

Congratulations to Gator Greg Lowen who broke the New England Boys 11-12 200 Yard Backstroke Record this weekend at the Groundhog's Day Classic with a time of 2:13.65.

The 11-12 200Y Backstroke was added as an event in 2001.
